Planet Labs, a prominent provider of daily Earth data and insights, has extended its partnership with the Taylor Geospatial Institute (TGI) through 2026. This contract marks Planet’s largest direct collaboration with a university consortium, highlighting TGI’s growing influence in geospatial research. The multi-year agreement enables TGI to harness a range of Planet’s industry-leading products, including the flagship PlanetScope data, a comprehensive data archive, high-resolution SkySat imagery, and advanced Planetary Variable analytics.
Established in 2022, the Taylor Geospatial Institute is a pioneering force in the geospatial field, dedicated to driving research, fostering collaboration, and creating impactful solutions. TGI unites eight leading universities and research institutions in a consortium that seeks to amplify cooperation, connect with partners across the geospatial ecosystem, and strategically align expertise, resources, and unique strengths to generate cutting-edge research and innovation.
Next generation of geospatial professionals
The access to Planet’s data equips TGI researchers to tackle critical challenges such as national security and global food security, while also advancing key initiatives in geospatial science, computational methods, and artificial intelligence. Moreover, this partnership supports TGI’s commitment to educating and preparing the next generation of professionals in the geospatial field.
“Planet is proud to continue serving the Taylor Geospatial Institute with its powerful dataset, enabling industry leaders to accelerate critical research into a wide variety of research areas from climate change to human-environment impacts,” said Will Marshall, CEO and co-founder of Planet Labs. “Through this partnership, these world-class institutions can leverage cutting-edge technologies and Earth observation analytics to help advance our understanding of our planet.”
“Planet was TGI’s first commercial data partner and their data has paved the way to fueling the work of our researchers across the consortium, from research on arctic tundra ecosystem dynamics to remote sensing studies of soybean crop quality and yield,” commented Nadine Alameh, executive director at TGI. “I’m excited about extending this partnership as it’s critical for our recently launched strategic initiatives on global food security and GeoAI; and our commitment to accelerating the commercialization of mature research results in partnership with industry.”
